Do you know the story of how the sparrows (known as a mossie in South Africa) landed on South Africa’s 1c coin?
The coin tells the story of the women & children survivors of concentration camps during the South African War who clung to hope and a Bible verse that inspired them to believe in their worth. One inhabitant of the camp was praying fervently for a sign to strengthen war-stricken women in the concentration camp and the next day she opened her Bible at Matthew 10:29-30:
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground …. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows”
Out of the blue, a little sparrow flew down and perched on her shoulder to the amazement of the women she was with and from then on, the modest mossie became their symbol of hope.
At the end of the war, the humble sparrow was embossed on South Africa’s humblest coin and would serve as a reminder of our worth & a symbol of hope.
